Former Election Agent to incumbent Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, John Thurso, has this week been welcomed to the Scottish National Party by parliamentary candidate Dr Paul Monaghan.
Well known Caithness man, Paul Thatcher, has joined the SNP. He has decided that the SNP is the only party capable of delivering the fairer Scotland that people across Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross want.
Mr Thatcher is a native of Highland village Reay, and had spent many years rising through the Lib Dem party structure before being landed the job of Thurso’s Election Agent in the 2005 parliamentary election. He grew up and spent most of his life in the village, where he attended school locally and was educated at North Highland College prior to pursuing a career in Estate Management.
He left the Lib Dems disillusioned with the lack of opportunity in his home area following decades of chronic under-investment and lethargic promises by former party colleague, John Thurso MP.
Mr Thatcher said that it had taken him a considerable length of time and much deliberation to make his decision.”It has become increasingly clear to me over the years that Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross receives a very poor deal from Westminster.
“After many months of heart searching and careful consideration I have decided to join the Scottish National Party. It has become increasingly clear to me over the years that Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross receives a very poor deal from Westminster.
“We have an MP, who I obviously know very well, that does not understand the challenges faced by ordinary people in the area. I have come to the conclusion that we must have significant change in Scotland if we are to sustain our way of life.
“There are many people like me that previously supported the Liberal Democrats who are now coming to realise that the party offers us nothing but hardship, disadvantage and austerity. It’s not good enough that the wealthy and privileged are getting richer at the expense of hardworking families.”
The final straw for Thatcher was when the Lib Dems joined forces with the Tories.
“I was very disappointed when the Liberal Democrats entered government with the Tories and believe they will, and should, pay a heavy price for that on 7 May.”
Thatcher was complimentary of the SNP’s parliamentary candidate for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, Dr Paul Monaghan.
“I have met Paul and was delighted in what I found. He is a man of obvious integrity with a sound understanding of the social and economic problems caused by the UK Government. I am reassured that he understands what needs to be done to help the people of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.
“He strikes me as a formidable character. He is very approachable but is equally determined, and I can say absolutely tenacious when defending the values and rights of rural communities. He will serve the people of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross in ways that we could only have dreamed of previously. The contrast between Paul and Lord Thurso is stark.”
Welcoming Mr Thatcher this week, Dr Monaghan said:
“I am delighted to welcome Paul to the Scottish National Party. Paul’s sense of profound disappointment and unease with the Liberal Democrats is increasingly common across the constituency. I find myself talking with people just like Paul in communities across the Far North.
“People like Paul have learned through personal experience that the Liberal Democrats have failed to deliver for hardworking families. In 2010 nobody in Caithness, Sutherland or Easter Ross voted for Lord Thurso hoping for a Tory government that would actively work to destroy our way of like. But that’s what happened.
“On 7th May, we finally have a chance to start a process of recovery and to start building the fairer society that we all want. I will be working for a stronger Scotland, and working to develop opportunities for every community in the constituency. Like Paul, I believe it really is a time for change.
“When people like Paul Thatcher, and his close links to Lord Thurso, warn that action to help Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross is required, people should listen.
“With a strong team of SNP MPs holding the balance of power at Westminster we can make Scotland’s priorities Westminster’s priorities – and can deliver the real powers of Home Rule to allow us to create a fairer society, which focuses on the many and not the privileged few.”
This news is the latest in a line of blows for Thurso – on Friday a TNS poll showed an increased lead for the SNP (+5) in General Election voting intentions, and a decrease for the Lib Dems (-1).
